Situated on a rocky spur overlooking the sea, Peschici is a jewel of shining whiteness. You can reach it through a road rich in hairpin bends, after crossing small promontories and tiny plains surrounded by a flourishing vegetation.
Sometimes you might notice one of the many "trabucchi", old fishing tools made of webs, beams and ropes that history dates back to ancient Phoenicians. Towards the horizon you’ll make out the Tremiti Islands and the Island of Pelagosa.
A legend from the XVI° century tells, that during a very hot day in july, all of a sudden an enomous swarm of locusts darkened the sun and destoryed gardens, olive groves and wine yards. The inhabitants of the village couldn't even leave their houses.
Frightened because of this terrible situation all the inhabitants of Peschici gathered together in the church and decided with the priest to organize a procession, in order to implore Saint Elia to liberate the village from the locusts.
They took the wooden statue of the Saint (that was abandoned in the chapel of the parish-church) and all together they went, praying and crying, to the castle.
The next morning the beach was full of dead locusts; on the inside of their wings there were the initials I and D (interpreted as IRA DEI = to punish those who were agains the church). Saint Elia was elected patron saint of Peschici. He is celebrated every year at 19/20/21 of july.
